In 2003 North Liverpool CAB established an advice service within HM Prison Liverpool (Walton Jail). Initially part of a Connexions-led partnership working with pre-release prisoners from the Merseyside area, we soon realised that demand for the service throughout the prison was very high, and, with the support of the Prison Resettlement Unit, were able to obtain Custody to Work funding from the Home Office to expand the service.
The CAB service now employs five advice workers, providing advice both to prisoners and via the Prison Visitors Centre. Prisoners can be signposted to the advice service at the start of their sentence or referred by one of the resettlement partners at pre-release, or can self-refer at any time. We also offer a range of financial skills courses as part of the prisoners resettlement programme, and are also partners in a multi-agency 'Insiders' initiative which will train and support long-term prisoners to 'signpost' others for help and advice.
