The Income maximisation Project (IMP) is a city-wide project initiated by the Citizens Advice Bureau, Liverpool Social Services and Mersey Care (NHS) Trust and funded through the Social Services Mental Health Grant.

The service was set up in response to research identifying that people with poor mental health fail, in significant numbers, to obtain their entitlement to benefits. This dedicated and targeted service enhances the income of people experiencing mental distress and therefore can have a positive impact on their quality of life.

The project provides advice, information and representation to clients with severe and/or enduring mental health problems. It focuses its provision on Income Maximisation, with particular reference to Welfare Benefits, Disability Benefits and to debt issues such as mortgage and rent arrears, fuel and water bills and other consumer debt.

There are three caseworkers based in the Citizens Advice Bureaux in Garston, Anfield and Toxteth. The project started in December 2000.

Clients can gain access to the service through referral from:

• Social Workers
• Psychiatrists
• CPNs
• Other health care workers

The service is provided in a variety of ways:

• Clients can be seen at the Day Hospitals of Park Lodge, Arundel House, Windsor House, or at Broadoak
• A Home visiting service is provided
• The client can choose an alternative venue such as the CAB
