Benefits for Older People Project
This is a joint project managed by North Liverpool and Garston Cabx, working with older people across the city, particularly those experiencing mental health difficulties. The project is funded by the Department of Works and Pensions until mid-2007 and we are actively seeking further funding. Benefits for Older People Report
The main aim of the project is to increase the take-up of Pension Credit, Attendance Allowance and Carers Allowance amongst ‘hard to reach’ older people, and so our project focuses mainly on advice and assistance in claiming these benefits. We also offer advice and assistance about related issues, including paying for care, debt problems, especially related to utilities and housing costs, and management of finances, especially where there are issues of mental capacity.
Many of the referrals to the project come from staff of Merseycare Primary Care Trust, which has responsibility for health and social work services for older people with a mental health problem. Other referrals come through the bureaux. Service users are seen in a variety of settings including home visits, appointments in bureau, and outreach at day centres and at in-patient units at Fazakerley and Mossley Hill hospitals.
North Liverpool, Garston and Toxteth CABx already run a well-established income maximisation project for adults experiencing mental ill-health. The workers on the older people’s project will become part of this city-wide team.
